Derby Gaol was purchased in 1997 by historian Richard Felix. It was then restored to it’s current condition, mirroring its original state.
The Gaol was opened in the mid 1700s and was home to murderers, common thieves, debtors. Men, women and children all were imprisoned together awaiting their fate sometimes more than 6 to a cell in squalid conditions. With over 50 recorded hangings taking place at the front of the gaol.
How many died in these very cells before they even stood trial?
In the early 1800s a new prison and our other terrifying location for the night was completed just a few minutes walk away from the ancient gaol where a couple of the rooms to include the execution room and the tower with the stone staircase leading to the top will be ours for the night.
