The Merchant’s House is a Grade II* structure located in the centre of Marlborough’s historic High Street. Following The Fire of Marlborough in 1653, the house was largely rebuilt by wealthy silk merchant, Thomas Bayly. The house was altered, extended and extended until about 1700. After this, the house was sub-divided and sublet with many different people occupying the building.
The Merchant’s House Trust bought 133 High Street in 1999 which reunited the two halves of the building.
The house was decorated with wall paintings, wooden panelling and a commanding oak staircase. A substantial amount of this fabric survives and previously hidden painted decoration is still being revealed.
The ghostly activity witnessed here by staff and visitors is frequent and well documented with the most frequent being:
A Boy in Blue seen on the stairs
A Green Lady gliding toward the Dining Room
Doors opening of their own accord
Unexplained footsteps echoing through the rooms
