Wincham Hall has always had a haunted reputation with many chilling experiences and ghostly sightings and until now has been a working hotel with a ghost hunt here being a rare occurrence

The hotel is now standing empty hidden away in a woodland with its own tales of unexplained sightings

For generations locals have talked about the hauntings of the ancient hall with roots stretch back nearly a millennium

With such a deep history, it’s no surprise that a few former residents are said to have stuck around. Since the 1970s, guests and paranormal enthusiasts have reported several entities haunting the halls:

• ​The Cavalier: One of the most famous ghostly figures at Wincham Hall is said to be the apparition of a Cavalier (a Royalist soldier from the English Civil War era).

• ​The Vanishing Child: There have been multiple reports of a ghostly child spotted running down a corridor before suddenly vanishing straight through a solid wall.

​These sightings at Wincham Hall have cemented its place in local Northwich folklore.

Wincham (originally “Winundersham”) was first recorded in the Domesday Book of 1087. Over the next thousand years, the estate passed through the hands of the Venables family through various marriages and inheritances. In 1910, the Hall even served as a ladies’ college, attracting students from as far away as West Africa, India, and Chile.

While a large part of the original hall was demolished after World War II due to a lack of interest and funds, the remaining structure forms the centrepiece of the hotel you see today.
