Colchester Castle is believed to be haunted by the ghost of James Parnell, a 17th-century Quaker imprisoned there in 1656. He was treated harshly, fell while retrieving food, and his health deteriorated, leading to his death. Visitors to the castle have reported hearing moans and seeing his apparition, often described as a small, thin man with a limp.

Here’s a more detailed breakdown:
  • James Parnell’s Imprisonment:
Parnell was imprisoned after an incident at Coggeshall Church, where he was arrested for blasphemy. He refused to pay the fine and was subsequently held in Colchester Castle.

  • Cruel Treatment:
His captors treated him poorly, forcing him to climb a rope to receive food, leading to a fall and serious injury.

  • Visitor Accounts:
People visiting the castle have reported hearing moans, and some have seen a ghostly figure that is thought to be Parnell.

  • Ghostly Appearance:
The apparition is often described as a small, thin man with a limp, which aligns with the physical description of Parnell.

  • Other Ghosts:
While Parnell is the most commonly cited, some accounts also mention other ghostly occurrences in the castle, including the apparitions of a monk and a headless soldier and of course the poor tortured souls, the accused witches who were held here by Hopkins
